Football is more than simply the action on the field. While everyone else stares at the big green box, eyes fixed under bright lights, we look the other way: at the relationships, reactions, moments and memories unfolding in the sidelines
Friday Night Sights is a semester project in which photographers take a different look at high school football and focus on finding features around the field.
I produced 17 packages alongside Madi Winfield and coached 31 photographers, and the majority being volunteer college students who have an early interest in photojournalism. This project helped many of them develop their skills and start a portfolio.
A big factor in our coaching was related to the safety of the photographers since they were working during the pandemic. In our Friday briefings we would ensure that they were feeling safe and prepared for the assignment, giving tips on how to approach people for information and how to photograph in a safe way.
